She is now a fluent signer who is also a licensed Maine interpreter. In 2003 she enrolled in USM’s ASL/English Interpreting program, where she was inspired by the words of Meryl Troop to “become a signing professional something”, which led her to MCD. Elissa began her career at MCD in 2006 as the Telecommunications Equipment Program Manager, a position she held for nearly two years before becoming MCD’s Executive Director. Elissa has tinnitus (constant ringing sound in the ears) that has gotten increasingly worse over the years, and which has caused her to gradually become hard of hearing. The Deaf person she met in 1996 is still in her life; he is her husband, Jeff Smith.
